Sustainable Fabrics

Sustainable Fabrics

Sustainable fabrics or sustainable textiles are materials derived from eco-friendly resources like natural fibers, and recycled materials such as cotton, wool, silk, and bamboo that are more sustainable than synthetic fibers, which typically include polyester, nylon and acrylic. But while natural fibers are more sustainable, there are still environmental concerns to consider. Cotton, for example, requires a great deal of water and pesticides to thrive. And, contrary to popular belief, comparing cotton fiber to recycled polyester fiber, the latter would be more sustainable.

Sustainable fabrics aim to reduce harm either through the production process, fiber properties, or overall environmental impact. These fabrics can also contribute to waste reduction, water conservation, lowered emissions, and soil regeneration.

Types of Sustainable Fabrics

Sustainable Fabrics: Organic

Organic fabrics are made using crops that are both grown and harvested without chemicals, herbicides or pesticides. Only natural fertilizers are used and soils are carefully monitored during the process to avoid contamination.

Sustainable Fabrics: Natural

If a fabric is ‘natural’, this means it is made from fibers that derive from either plants or animals. As they come from natural sources, these fabrics are typically sustainable as well as biodegradable. This is a huge advantage for the environment and reduces the rise of synthetic fast fashion being sent to landfill.

Sustainable Fabrics: Recycled

Using recycled materials even if those materials weren’t originally eco-friendly is another way to create sustainable fabrics by reusing our old clothing to create new pieces, there’s always something that can be reused and recycled into something cool and new.
